Population Growth Calculator – Continuous Exponential Model
Estimate continuous exponential population growth using P(t) = P₀e^(rt) from an initial population, continuous rate and time.
This calculator uses a continuous exponential growth model. It is a mathematical projection, not a guarantee that a real population will follow exponential growth indefinitely.
How it works
P(t) = P₀e^(rt), where P₀ is the initial population, r is the continuous growth rate per time unit and t is time.
Example
With P₀ = 1,000, r = 0.02 and t = 10, the estimate is about 1,221.
How to use
- Enter the initial population.
- Enter the continuous growth rate per time unit.
- Enter the elapsed time using the same time unit as the rate.
- Calculate the exponential-growth estimate.
Key features
- Continuous exponential model
- Consistent rate/time units
- Non-negative population and time validation
- Transparent formula
Common uses
- Biology modelling exercises
- Growth-rate demonstrations
- Comparing different continuous-rate scenarios
Frequently asked questions
Is this a prediction of a real population?
It is only a mathematical exponential model. Real populations can be limited by resources, migration and other factors.
Do rate and time need matching units?
Yes. A rate per year should be paired with time measured in years.
