Work Calculator – Force, Distance & Angle | MZ Smart Tools House
Calculate mechanical work from force, displacement and angle using W = F × d × cos(θ), with force in newtons and distance in metres.
Mechanical work depends on the component of force acting along the direction of displacement. This calculator uses the same force, distance and angle inputs as the implemented formula engine and returns work in joules.
How it works
W = F × d × cos(θ), where F is force in newtons, d is displacement in metres and θ is the angle between force and motion.
Example
If F = 10 N, d = 3 m and θ = 60°, then W = 10 × 3 × cos(60°) = 15 J.
How to use
- Enter force in newtons.
- Enter displacement in metres.
- Enter the angle in degrees between the force and the direction of motion.
- Calculate and review the work result in joules.
Key features
- Uses the implemented cosine-angle work formula
- Degree input for angle
- Result in joules
- Rejects invalid numeric input
Common uses
- Physics homework checks
- Mechanics examples
- Comparing how force angle changes work
Frequently asked questions
Why does the angle matter?
Only the component of force along the displacement contributes to mechanical work, which is represented by cos(θ).
What happens at 90 degrees?
cos(90°) is zero, so the calculated mechanical work is zero when the force is perpendicular to the displacement.
